About Dr. A.K. Banerji
Dr. A. K. Banerji is one of India’s most distinguished neurosurgeons and a pioneer in the development of modern neurosurgical practice in the country. After completing his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, and his MS/MCh in Neurosurgery from Christian Medical College, Vellore, he joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1965. At AIIMS, he played a pivotal role in establishing and expanding the Department of Neurosurgery, later serving as Professor and Chief of the Neurosciences Centre until 1995. Dr. Banerji is widely credited with introducing microneurosurgery to India and advancing subspecialties such as cerebrovascular, peripheral nerve, skull-base, and pediatric neurosurgery. A respected academic leader, he has served as president of multiple national neurosurgical societies and has trained several generations of neurosurgeons. After AIIMS, he contributed to the development of VIMHANS and later served as Senior Advisor at Medanta’s Institute of Neurosciences, continuing his lifelong commitment to excellence in neurosurgical care.
