Liver cancer originates within the cells of the liver and can develop in several different forms. The most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma, which begins in hepatocytes—the primary cells of the liver. Less common types include intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma. While primary liver cancer starts in the liver itself, it is more common for cancer to spread to the liver from other parts of the body. This is known as metastatic liver cancer. For instance, if cancer starts in the colon, lungs, or breasts and then spreads to the liver, it is referred to as metastatic colon cancer, metastatic lung cancer, or metastatic breast cancer, respectively, depending on the origin.
